JOB: PROJECT ACCOUNTANT

SALARY: 45-55K + EXCELLENT BENEFITS

As Project Accountant, you will play a key role in providing financial oversight, control, and reporting on projects. You will ensure project costs, revenues, risks and cashflows are tracked accurately, while supporting project managers and senior leaders with timely financial insights to drive performance and accountability.     


The business offers a truly flexible and hybrid working approach, where you will be based at their new modern offices in the centre of York 3 days per week, with the option of the other 2 days from home.

Specific Requirement:


Reporting to the Financial Planning & Analysis Manager, your remit will be varied and will include:


Project Support:

  • Partner with project managers to provide financial insights, risks, and opportunities.
  • Review and validate project-related contracts, invoices, and purchase orders.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, funding agreements, and regulatory standards.

Business Partnering:

  • Build strong relationships with project managers and functional leads.
  • Translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-financial colleagues and stakeholders, particularly within the development and / or construction teams.
  • Challenge assumptions and provide constructive input to improve project decision- making.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to ensure alignment between financial performance and strategic objectives.

Financial Control & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate financial records for assigned projects.
  • In collaboration with relevant colleagues prepare monthly project cost reports, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Ensure project budgets and forecasts reflect accurate financial data.
  • Monitor project financials, cash flow, and funding requirements.

Audit & Governance:

  • Support internal and external audits of project accounts.
  • Ensure all transactions adhere to accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Maintain documentation to ensure transparency and accountability in project reporting.

Continuous Improvement:

·       Contribute to the development of project accounting tools, processes, and systems.

·       Support training of project staff in financial awareness and budget management.

·       Identify opportunities to improve project financial performance.


Skills & Experience required:


  • Qualified or Part-Qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA/ACMA or Qualified by Experience.
  • Relevant experience in project accounting, financial control, or management accounting.
  • Strong understanding of project-based financial management
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, project-based or transferable capital- intensive industries preferred.
  • Proficiency in ERP and project accounting software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • High attention to detail with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Commercial awareness with a proactive, collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
